About The REAL Ms. Frizzle's Niece
Science should be Fun!
Thanks so much for dropping by! Â
My choice in moniker has a deep tie to my extended family. Â Both of my Grandmothers were in education as well as several aunts and uncles. Â Specifically my mother's youngest sister who won the national Ms. Frizzle lookalike contest when I was little and got to spend a year traveling around the country visiting schools as Ms. Frizzle. Â Now that Netflix has resurrected the Magic School Bus with Ms. Frizzle's niece taking over her classroom I found it was the perfect moniker to use for myself!
To give you a bit of background on me, I grew up in northern Idaho and received my Bachelors degree and first Masters from Idaho State University (major: Psychology, minor: Biology; Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences specializing in Medicinal Chemistry). Â After taking a brief hiatus from my own education to follow my husband to North Carolina so that he could get his PhD in Nuclear Engineering at NC State University, I started teaching in my own Chemistry classroom until we moved to New Mexico so that my husband could start his career at the Los Alamos National Laboratory and I went back to school for my second Masters in Chemistry specializing in Educational Chemistry from South Dakota State University. Â
For the past 3 years I have been teaching chemistry at the local high school.  When the pandemic first hit in the spring of 2020 I spent the time dreaming up my ideal chemistry classroom and over the last 2 years I have worked to get myself to the point at which I could implement that dream.  With our return to in-person learning this school year, 21/22, I was able to implement my dream classroom with the support of my fellow department instructors and administrators.  This blog will track how I have accomplished Flipping my Chemistry classes and how I have dealt with challenges in that implementation as well as resources I have utilized to accomplish the transition.
